Session Six: The Planet at a Tipping Point

Hunger stalks the planet. The war in Ukraine, the breadbasket of Europe, has only made the situation more drastic. A severe crisis in food security is arising. Can new technologies and increased funding help avert the potential catastrophe? Global food executives help us identify what we’ll eat in a bigger, hotter and smarter world.

Below are some highlights from the session.

Food Security in Peril

“When we think about the food supply chain, we don’t think about improving it, we design it from A to Z completely,” said Erez Galonska, Founder & CEO, Infarm. To increase food production, Infarm wants to find new efficient ways to grow food in harsh climates that are unsuitable for agriculture. This will help with both resilience and sustainability — such that everyone gets premium and nutritional produce affordably.

H.E. Dr. Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser, Chairman, Islamic Development Bank Group stated that food is related to jobs, with 50 to 75% of employment in some countries related to agriculture. “When we look at agriculture we don’t look just at food,” he said. He added that the Islamic Development Bank will work with farmers, governments, NGOs, and other organizations to enhance the food ecosystem.

“The farmer is and always will be, in any story about food security, the hero of the story,” said Christopher Cleverly, President, Tingo. He talked passionately against farmer exploitation and charging high-interest rates, especially on the poorest of us all.

UN’s Amina Mohammed on Feeding the Planet

Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations said that food is a great concern. She added that there should be a peaceful resolution to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the UN is urgently addressing the rising cost of food, fuel and speeding up the green transition.
