In Conversation With Secretary Mnuchin

On the war in Ukraine – Steven T. Mnuchin, 77th Secretary of the Treasury, The United States of America, said it is not clear if sanctions are working. He disagreed with Henry Kissinger’s advice to cede territory to Russia, called for an unconditional ceasefire and for global allies to unite to encourage both sides to come to the table. 

On inflation – “It’s the Federal Reserve’s job and the administration needs to not get in the way.” He advised that nothing be done to shock the economy. “From an economic standpoint we need to figure out how to get a stop to the war, even if it’s just temporary, a frozen conflict.”

On geopolitics – Mnuchin does not see China attacking Taiwan in the near term. He said a lot more work is needed on the U.S. trade deal with China “on areas of mutual cooperation.”
